Athletes and Gambling

About 35 percent of males and 10 percent of females reported
wagering on any sports events in the past year, in direct
violation of NCAA bylaws regarding sports wagering.
Overall, it is estimated that a total of 66,800 men and 12,500
women athletes engaged in some sort of sports wagering activity in
the past year.
Twenty percent of males and five percent of females reported
wagering on collegiate sporting events in the past year.
Less than five percent of males and one-half of one percent of
females were categorized as problem or pathological gamblers.
Student athletes who gamble with bookmakers are wagering substantial
amounts of money.
A University of Michigan study of Division I athletes determined
that the mean amount of money wagered on a single sports bet through
a bookmaker by student athletes was $57.25. Furthermore, the
student athletes who gambled on sports with bookmakers were wagering
an average of $225.00 each month.
